Introduction to Multiplying and Dividing Mixed Numbers and Complex Fractions

A young man kneeling to pet several puppies in a kennel Feeding dogs at an animal shelter presents an interesting division problem.
Rufus volunteers at an animal shelter. Every morning, he feeds each dog 2/3 cup of food. If each bag of dog food contains 25 1/3 cups of food, how many dogs can he feed with each bag? This may sound like a simple division problem, but Rufus will need to figure out how to deal with a mixed number (25 1/3) before he can find the answer. In this section, you'll learn how to multiply and divide with mixed numbers and complex fractions.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this section, you will be able to:
  • Multiply and divide mixed numbers
  • Translate phrases to expressions with fractions
